Mum & Magpie i

Croydon, March 2020

Over the past year, the garden has been the only consistent source of sun and fresh air for my mum and I. It largely became a space associated with relief and calm during the first lockdown, and has carried on that way.

My time spent outside in the garden - having breakfast, lunch,  tea, soaking up the sun in it, photographing it - made me truly "see" this space, one I thought was so familiar and well-worn, where instead I’ve found moments of unfamiliarity and moments of magic.

This was one of those surreal moments; this curious creature somehow ended up flying into our house one gorgeous blue-sky day and got stuck in our living room. My mum rescued the bird and set it free again. It was an incredibly timely real-life metaphor - a moment of struggle and panic, but with some help and kindness, the magpie was able to fly away to freedom again.
